"Hanatarou, do you really think we'll find it here?"

"Well, at least I hope so... thanks for coming with me, Rukia-San..."

"Someone has to do that... you don't want to get lost again, do you?"

"N-naah...", a nervous laugh.

It had been only a few hours since Rukia had come back to life, and now it was, once again, her turn to look after the last person she had expected here, Yamada Hanatarou.

She didn't ask what he was doing here or why he ended up with her, since he wouldn't answer properly anyway. All she knew was that he was here, and that he had managed to lose his Zanpakutou again.

"Why do you always lose it? You know that this sword is as important as your life?!"

"I... I know...", he looked down, obviously having a bad conscience. "It's just that... I was all alone, and... I wanted to find Kuchiki-Taichou soon, and... and..."

He started pressing his fingertips against each other. As usual. She was convinced he was doing this on purpose. Every time he did this, nobody could ever be mad with him. Nobody.

"-sigh- Alright, alright, c'mon. It has to be somewhere.." -As long as no Arrancar has found it yet, she added in thoughts. If this ever happened, they'd all be doomed.

Hanatarou seemed to think the same, but her encouraging words made his face lighten up a little.

"You're right, Rukia-San!"

"That's a good boy."

He's just like a child. That was what she had thought about him when they met for the first time.

Hueco Mundo's not a place for a child. That was what she had thought when he popped up here.

It had been only a few hours after his arrival in Hueco Mundo.

After managing to get cut by Rukia-San, who had actually been the main reason for begging Kuchiki-Taichou to take him with him, and getting healed by his Fukutaichou, he finally noticed that Hisagomaru had disappeared! Immediately, he began rummaging his bag, but it was definitely not there....

Oh well, at least it was Rukia-San who helped him searching it. She couldn't remember a single thing of what happened, and he wasn't able to tell her the true reason for him to be bandaged.

It had been a long time since they had talked to each other, and it felt good hearing her voice again... although she was mainly worrying about Abarai-Fukutaichou and Ichigo-San.

Since his arrival, he had been able to sense tracks of their reiatsu. They were both apparently fighting, but they would be okay... they had to be.

I'm gonna look after Abarai-Fukutaichou as soon as I've found Hisagomaru-San... I promised Rikichi-San to.

Suddenly, he remembered his friend's face when he caught Hana trying to leave without saying good-bye. He had never seen him this desperate before, and he never wanted to see him like this again... if he was able to leave Hueco Mundo alive.

Mmhhh, what am I thinking?! Of course I will...

"Hanatarou, are you alright?", Rukia's voice suddenly ripped him out of his thoughts.

"What? Oh, yeah, sure, sorry... I was just in thoughts.. I'm sorry, Rukia-San."

He started smiling again. Just being with her gave him hope... he simply didn't have to think about what was probably going to happen.

"Hey, isn't that your sword over there?", she suddenly pointed at a small, silvery-shining spot a few meters in front of them.

"It is!! I-I'm sorry, Rukia-San, please let me...", he hurried off and left her behind, with a puzzled, but also amused expression on her face.

As soon as he bowed down, he heard a pretty familiar voice inside of his head.

Oh, so you've finally come, huh?!

"Y-yes, I'm sorry, Hisagomaru-San...", he murmured.

You're sorry? You're SORRY? You know what could've happened while I was lying around?!

"Y-yes, but.."

Don't give me that 'Y-yes, but-" crap, you're always doing that! When will you finally grow up!?

"I'm trying already, but.. but..."

Well, then DO IT! Could you please stop being so selfish?! Just because YOU wanted to save Rukia-Chan...

"Sh-she could've died", his voice sank with every word he said.

And? You're a shinigami, remember? You ought to be used to see people dying!

"But not Rukia-San..."

You weren't able to do anything anyway, were you? In the end, it was that Kuchiki guy and Isane-Chan who-

And then, it stopped; Hana felt Rukia's hand on his shoulder.

"What's wrong? You look terrible!"

"Rukia-San...", he looked up, trembling, with a horrible, whiny face.

"H-hey!! Hanatarou?! What's the matter? What happened?!"

"I'm sorry I'm no big use...."

"Oh, yes you are!"

"B-but... Rukia-San... am I selfish?"

"What?! You're quite the least selfish person I know-"

"But I.. I wasn't allowed to come here, and still I came because I wanted so save y-...", he stopped hastily and looked away.

"I mean, b-because I wanted to help everyone.."

For a short while, neither of them said a word.... until Rukia finally sighed once more and then looked straight into his face.

"Look. I don't want to argue with you or something, so just believe me when I say you aren't? You even need to be a little more selfish from time to time. Otherwise, your friends don't know what you want, right?", she ended and patted his head like a puppy's one.

"Rukia-San...", Hana rubbed his eyes heavily, he didn't want her to see him crying.

"Now come on, we gotta go back and find Nii-Sama and your Fukutaichou... and then we've gotta help Renji and the others, kay?"

"Sure, Rukia-San! ... thank you, Rukia-San", he added quietly, not for her to hear.

Even when they were all probably going to die... at least he was able to help her now.

He remembered their first meeting, smiling brightly; it had been the beginning of a new life to him.

#04 - Bugs

She was a noble and yet wasn't; she was the only one who didn't treat him like some dirty insect.

Her stories from the real world fascinated him; even the drinks seemed to be ways different from what they drank at home.

Being with Rukia felt like someone had set a small light in the dark, bright and warm, a gentle hope.

"Hey, why are you bandaged?", she asked him after waking up in Hueco Mundo. "Oh, I've been fighting hollows...", he answered, smiling nervously and avoiding her eyes - he wasn't able to tell her the truth.

"I-I feel very honored, ma'm", he stammered when he met her for the first time, "A-and I hope we'll get along well for.. for the next few days..." He expected her to ignore him, to shoo him, even to shout at him- but all she did was smile and answer "You don't to be nervous."

He had lost all of his hope, he was imprisoned and had to rely on Ichigo-San to save Rukia-San... when he suddenly heard someone stumpling down the stairs, shouting "Hanatarou-San!! You have to save Renji-San!!"

"She's like a candle when it's dark and cold outside.. aahh, I can't really compare this feeling with anything, do you know what I mean, Rikichi-San?", Hana desperately tried to describe his feelings for Rukia, but it was helpless; Rikichi was already convinced that his friend had fallen in love.

And in the end, it was her turn to look after him- why the hell did he always manage to get lost!? Shouting his name and trying to sense tracks of his reiatsu, she ran through the endless desert of Hueco Mundo.

"Wh-what kind of music is that?!", he asked her in shock and put down the earphones. "I knew the human world was very strange but.." Rukia wasn't able to answer, she was laughing too hard at his stunned expression.

Feelings like this were totally new to him and he didn't know what they were supposed to mean- but they felt so good... if only they could stay like this forever...

He had talked to girls before, but he had never met someone like her; the others always used to giggle at him.

"And when all of this is over, we'll all be able to live together in peace, you'll see!", he knew that these were empty words, but his smile remained; this was the only thing he could do to give her hope in the darkness of Hueco Mundo.

"What the hell was this?!", she asked him in shock, and with a bright smile he pulled out a bottle with a green posion in it. The longer he knew her, the prettier she seemed; when she smiled at him, he felt the blood rushing into his face, just why was his heart beating so fast?!

And suddenly, he felt how the rain stopped; it took some time until he realized that Rukia had approached with an umbrella. "What are you doing out here!? Come on, you'll catch a cold.."

#34 - Regret

Hana didn't regret a single thing he had done; although he was punished, it had been worth it; at least he had been able to help Ichigo-San and Abarai-Fukutaichou saving Rukia-San.

#35 - Roses

"Hey look, these are pretty too, aren't they?", smiling excitedly, he took her hand and pulled her through an alley of flowers; she couldn't help but smile at his childlike joy.

#36 - Secret

"Can you keep a secret, Hanatarou?" "Well, sure... what's the matter, Rukia-San?" And then she told him all about her feelings for Abarai-Fukutaichou; with every word she said, the unexplicable pain in his chest grew. But why did it hurt so much...

When Rukia compared Ichimaru-Taichou with a snake, Hana wasn't very surprised; this was the same he had thought when he had met that man for the first time.

Hana's first winter as a shinigami was also his best; when the first snowflakes silently floated down, he immediately ran over to the 13th division to tell Rukia-San.

#39 - Solid

This time, he wasn't going to give up; no matter how much they were going to hurt him, he'd never tell them where Rukia-San was. "Let them kill me", he thought fiercely, "At least my death won't be in vain..."

A single cherry blossom fell down and landed on his dark hair. "Hey, you have...", Rukia picked it up and grinned at him; immediately he began blushing and stammering "Th-Thank you..."

"Eh? Going on vacations? With you and the others? Why me?", although he was very surprised, Hana couldn't hold back his overflowing happiness.

It was an absolute taboo for him to disobey orders and even help the enemy, but this one time, he didn't care as long as he was able to save Rukia-San.

Everytime he looked at her, he couldn't help but feel ugly; she was so beautiful and wise, and he was just... Yamada Hanatarou.

Only a few months after the ryoka incident, war broke out again; he swore to himself that this time, he'd save Rukia-San on his own.

And then, it became winter again.. and although it was snowing, Hanatarou didn't feel cold at all.

Well, of course there are.. it's the eleventh division after all. Every day, they start fighting just for fun... and in the end, it's us, the fourth division, who have to treat them.

"Huh? What's one of those fourth division bastards doing here?"

"We don't need you, brat, just go home, 'kay?!"

"Did you say fourth division? Hey, I'm bored, how 'bout having some fun?"
"Yeah, same here.. at least we'll be able to kill some time.. and maybe kill something else.."

Loud laughter.

"Ano..", Hanatarou tried to stay calm and failed. He knew what was going to happen now. The same as every time.

He took deep breath and hid his hands behind his back. He didn't want to show they were trembling.

"This is an order from Unohana-Taichou, and as a seventh seat, it's my duty to-"

Loud laughter. Again and again.

"Your duty, huh?"

I hate them... there aren't many people out there I really hate. Of course they all often tease me, but... these people are different from those of my own division.

A huge, bear-like warrior, probably one of their higher ranks, approached him. Automatically, he took a step back, trying to suppress the panic that was starting to take over his body.

"Listen. You know what we do with scum like you?"

"I know...", he answered quietly, looking down, refusing to look in the ugly face in front of him.

I've seen what they have done to that girl from the sanitary station... that's why i hate them.

"What?!", another one behind him shouted. Hana hadn't even heard him coming, but he managed not to look back, otherwise they'd see his frightened face. "I'm sorry, you have to talk louder, I don't understand that shit of yours."

"I know...", he repeated a little louder, still looking on the floor. He wouldn't let them have what they wanted.

"Holy shit, I have enough of him. Why don't you just kill him?", someone shouted.

"Yeah, that'd be the best. You know what that is, brat?", the man in front of him drew his zanpakutou and pointed it directly at Hana's chest, which was lifting very fast now.

Calm down, calm down, calm down...

"I.... I'm...", he stammered.

The crowd around him started laughing again.

It's just because I'm too weak... but that's why...

Within only a few seconds, he suddenly grapped something inside his Shihakushou, a bottle with a green liquid and opened it.

That's why I'm good at running away..

"I'm sorry!", he yelled and poured it right into the face of the 11th division in front of him, who immediately struggeled back, swearing.

Without looking back, Hana automatically turned around and dashed away.

He could hear them behind him, probably even four or five people of them following him... but he wouldn't let them get him.

Only a few meters later, still with some shouting fighters behind him, he suddenly bumped into a familiar person and fell down.

"I'm sorry!!"

"Hana? What's the matter?", he heard the voice of his best friend asking.

"Can't explain - eleventh division - gotta go-"

"Oh, so it's them again?", he asked as if there wasn't a bunch of bloodthirsty killers behind him, just their angry teacher back from their academy days.

"Don't so relaxed - Help - Kill me-"

"Alright, alright.. it's not that I want to deal with them, either", Rikichi grinned.

".....Uhm... are you sure we're save?"

"Sure, they'll never find us here!"

"But.. this is just an old broom closet."

"And that's the genious part about it! Don't you understand? This is just so so classic, they'll never think we're that stupid..."

"Do you want to say that we're stupid?"

Hana looked at his friend, still a little worried, but also grinning now.

This was just so typical.

"...well........", Rikichi looked really uncomfortable and doesn't really seem to know what to say.

"Alright, I understand.", Hana answered and laughed silently. Not because he found the situation very funny... but because he was just so relieved about the person who had picked him up, and because of the happiness he always felt when he was together with his friend.

"Sssh, I think someone's coming!", Rikichi whispered and automatically pressed his hand on Hana's mouth.

Some steps in front of the door. And voices. Loud, agressive voices.

"Hey, maybe they're in here..."

"In a broom closet? Naah, that's just too classic, even those guys will be that stupid..."

They could hear the footsteps moving on, until nobody was out there again.

Finally, Hana managed to pull Rikichi's hand away and started laughing again, loudly this time.

"Alright... I'll never be in doubt about your genious plans again, Rikichi-San..."

"Told ya so."

A few moments, none of them said anything, and slowly, Hana also calmed down again, although he was still smiling.

"You know", Rikichi started, avoiding Hana's eyes for some reason, "It's always been like that.. remember when we were small-"

"Actually, we're still small. Kind of. At least Abarai-Fukutaichou keeps saying that", Hana interrupted.

"Fine, fine. You know what I mean, right? When we were kids. Back then in Rukongai. You always got lost in that forest, remember? And in the end, it was always me who had to pick you up."

"Oh... please don't bring that up again.."

"Or when these kids from our town wanted to beat you up, remember.."

"Please don't make me remember that, Rikichi-San."

"Or in the academy, remember that one? When we had our first mission in the real world and you were-"

"Alright, alright! I know that I'm-"

"WHAT I WANT TO SAY IS...."

Is he even listening to what I'm saying...

Rikichi looked up again, smiling.

"What I want to say is... that it's probably all gonna stay like that. And I don't mind at all. And you wanna know why?"

"You're gonna tell me anyway.."

"Because we're both idiots.", Rikichi ended, laughing.

"Hey, Rikichi-San? Can I ask you something?"

Rikichi seemed a little disappointed to see that his friend apparently wasn't moved by his speach at all.

"What?"

"Are you alright? You haven't talked about Abarai-Fukutaichou for at least five minutes-"

"Oh, SHUT UP."

Hana didn't answer and just smiled his calm smile. It was that kind of smile that made his friend obviously mad.

I'm so glad I have a friend like you....
